Centre for International Negotiations

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, having started as an Institute with a focus on international trade, has evolved over the years into an Institute of International Business. The Institute thus is in a unique position, dealing with international trade on a much bigger canvas of international business. Besides, the Institute has all these years provided training on the various aspects of international trade and business to the officials in both public and private domain. It has trained government officials with as much ease and finesse as it has imparted training to the executives from the corporate world. It has over the decades built a huge inventory of expertise in international trade and business which no other institute in the country can come close to. It is not without any reason that the business organizations of all hues and shades and the public institutions of Centre and states have always confided in IIFT about their international trade related training needs and, it goes without saying, that the Institute has always risen to the occasion whenever it was called upon to deliver.

IIFT has an extensive presence of international negotiations across its variety of programs, flagship and otherwise. In addition, as pointed out, the Institute can provide an integrated learning in negotiations with experiences drawn from a variety of assignments spread over decades. Locating a Centre for International Negotiations at IIFT is a very timely proposal and addresses the need of the hour. With a multiplicity of actors participating in bilateral, regional, plurilateral, and multilateral trade negotiations, dealing with a myriad of issues and counterparts in a highly competitive environment, it is thus necessary to impart negotiation skills to those who engage in them. It takes highly skilled professionals to extract integrated win-win outcomes and lay the foundation for long term relationships and an orderly system. IIFT is a good connecting point between a whole lot of negotiation experience that resides in the corporate sector and the experience that government officials and negotiators possess. Negotiation is an art and science at the same time and there are certain fundamental principles which have universal applications in any kind of negotiation situation. This integrated approach will be beneficial for the officials in both public and private domain as they learn from each other. The Centre endeavors to consolidate the negotiations-related training that the Institute has been doing for the senior officers of the various central services and the senior executives from the public and private sector.

The Centre for International Negotiations, envisioned by the Department of Commerce of the GOI and the Vice Chancellor of the Institute, is headed by Dr Rohit Mehtani, Professor of International Business Strategy, International Trade Law and International Business Negotiations. He is also heading the Management Development Programs Division of the Institute and is thus in a unique position to integrate the learning requirements of the corporate and the public sector. He is supported by faculty members Dr Vijaya Katti, Dr Ginni Chawla, and Dr Priyanka Jaiswal, the Section Officer, Mr. Rahul Kapoor, the Assistant Marketing Manager, Mr. Udit Pratap Chauhan, and the Senior Assistant (MDP), Ms. Seema Yadav.
