IIFT has been conducting the training programme for the Indian Trade Services (ITS) since 1990s. As the batch size used to be small, the ITS Probationers usually attended the courses along with the MBA batch of students. For the past four batches (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 the training has been conducted exclusively for the Probationers.
The current batch consists of 4 Probationers. The training commenced from 30th January,2017, for a period of 9 months (concluding in the month of October).
As the role of DGFT has been changing, the curriculum for the training programme has also evolved. From being an enforcer and controller, the DGFT has changed its role to focus more on Trade facilitation and promotion
Initially the training used to focus more on export import procedures and documentation. The programme was divided into three trimesters comprising of 7 to 8 courses of twenty or thirty hours each, in each Trimester. But this year training has been divided into two phases where ITS probationers are attached for 4 months with IIFT and in Second phase 3 months with DGFT and last two months with IIFT.
The training programme encompasses a wide array of courses that range from Indian Economics, India’s Foreign Trade Policy, International marketing, International Economics, global business environment.
Due to the increasing relevance and focus on reducing transaction costs, courses on International Trade Operations, Trade Logistics, and Global Sourcing were also covered. India’s increasing presence in WTO related issues has highlighted the importance of training in these areas. The sessions have been taken by Senior faculty from IIFT as well as domain area experts as guest faculty.
In addition to class room teaching and academic inputs the attachments, interactions and field visits are also organized:
