The Distance and Online programmes at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) have been designed to provide adequate exposure to the students to all trade promoting infrastructure that includes export promotion agencies such as the Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation, Exim Bank of India, banks and factoring agencies that provide export credit, export inspection councils as also the regulatory agencies such as the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, the Reserve Bank of India and the State Governments. Students of Distance and Online programmes, as part of their course, regularly work on projects and case studies for which they go on local field visits and meet exporters, importers, shippers, freight forwarders and all the agencies that govern or facilitate exports in any manner. This has been a very satisfying experience for the students as learning through technology is combined with face-to-face interactions on their topics of interest. Besides, it gives them a chance for networking and exploring new placement opportunities in the field of international business.
The students also take their placement activity very seriously and appoint different coordinators for different associated activities. Database of companies of interest and matching of student profiles is all taken up by students. The Institute provides them with the database of IIFT Alumni of all programmes with whom they are frequently in touch for knowledge of new opportunities and general and specific mentoring. The IIFT Alumni list also contains names of Alumni who have gone into entrepreneurship and have successful start-ups. These Alumni are invited by the Institute to address the participants during their coursework in the programme. The students visit their enterprises for inspiration and guidance. Social media is, of course, another platform for their interaction with each other.
Thus, there is a very structured system at the Institute to facilitate placements of all students, including the students of distance and online programmes.
